A homemade witch costume is easy to create right down to the hat. The witch is a favorite during the Halloween season and can include different types. From the evil witch to the good witch to the Gothic witch, this is a costume that you can have fun with and be as creative as you like. The main aspects of any witch’s costume are the dress, a cape, the hat, shoes and hair. Of course the make-up will be needed as well.
The dress for an evil witch or a Gothic witch should be dark in color, preferably black. This can be fashioned from basically any material. Cutting out arm holes and a hole for the head and belting or tying it around the waist is easy. If you are good at sewing, it can be cut out using a pattern for a dress and sewn together.
Remember if the look you are trying to achieve is the evil witch, the dress does not have to be perfect. The most important thing is that it is long and dark so that it creates the basic part of the costume for the accessories. Skirts can be worn as well and more than one with a raggedy dark colored shirt can give you the look of a decrepit old witch. Often the old clothes for a perfect witch costume can be found at thrift stores.
The hat is another trademark of the witch. This can be made by using cardboard or another type of material that is stiff enough to hold up when put together. The brim and the cone of the hat will need to be cut out in the right size. Measuring the head is a good idea to ensure that the hat will stay in place. The cone will need to be tall enough and come to a point on the top. Connect the two pieces together with glue that will last at least through the night.
The shoes should be dark and usually everyone has a pair of black shoes, so this is not a difficult part of putting together a homemade witch costume. If needed, black stockings can be added to the costume for a more authentic look. This is a good idea if the weather is cool.
Another part of the costume is the hair. It helps if you already have long hair and if your hair color is black, this is even better. If not, there are temporary spray-on hair colors that will wash out after your adventure as a witch. Teasing the hair and making it look as if it has not been brushed for a long time is another must for the witch. Add some gray to the black color for an awesome look.
The costume will need to include make-up. A green tint will be a great effect. This make-up is not hard to find around Halloween and is very inexpensive. Adding moles using a black eye-liner is another feature that can be added to the face for a truly witchy look. With all of these tips, a homemade witch costume will be a snap.
Witches are always my favorite, there’s something creepy about a wart with hair on it!
